What Is a Keratin Treatment and Is It Worth It?
Keratin treatments are one of those things that people either swear by or are slightly nervous about trying. I get asked about them a lot - usually from clients who are tired of fighting frizz every morning or spending ages blow-drying their hair straight only for the Scottish weather to undo it all by lunchtime.
I've been doing keratin blow drys at my studio in Paisley for years, and I've seen the difference they make firsthand. So here's a straightforward guide to what they actually are, who they work best for, and whether they're worth your money.
What Actually Is Keratin?
Keratin is a protein that your hair is naturally made of. Over time, heat styling, chemical treatments, sun exposure, and everyday wear and tear break down those proteins. A keratin treatment puts them back in. It coats the hair shaft with a layer of keratin, smoothing down the cuticle and filling in the gaps where damage has occurred.
The result is smoother, shinier, more manageable hair - and significantly less frizz.
What Happens During the Treatment
At Locks of Love, a keratin blow dry takes around 90 minutes to two hours. Here's how it works:
- Wash and prep - I start by washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove any product build-up and open the cuticle.
- Apply the treatment - The keratin product is worked through your hair section by section. It needs to be applied evenly, which is why this part takes time and precision.
- Blow dry and seal - I blow dry your hair smooth, then use a flat iron to seal the keratin into the hair shaft. The heat activates the product and locks it in place.
You walk out with noticeably smoother, softer hair straight away. Over the following few days, the treatment continues to settle in.
Who Is It Best For?
Keratin treatments work well for a wide range of hair types, but they're especially good for:
- Frizzy or coarse hair - This is where you'll see the most dramatic difference. Hair that normally puffs up in humid weather stays smooth and controlled.
- Thick, hard-to-manage hair - If your blow dry routine takes 30+ minutes, a keratin treatment can cut that time in half. Genuinely. I've had clients tell me their morning routine went from 40 minutes to 15.
- Damaged or dry hair - The treatment adds a protective layer and smooths down rough cuticles, so damaged hair looks and feels healthier.
- Anyone who wants less hassle - If you want your hair to behave with minimal effort, this is probably the most effective single treatment you can get.
Who Might Want to Think Twice
I'm always honest with my clients about this. Keratin treatments aren't ideal for everyone:
- Very fine hair - The treatment can weigh fine hair down and make it look flat. If you've got fine, limp hair, the extra smoothing can take away volume you actually want.
- If you love your natural curl pattern - Keratin doesn't permanently straighten hair, but it does loosen curls. If you love your curls as they are and just want less frizz, we should talk about other options first.
- Recently bleached or heavily processed hair - Very damaged hair can sometimes react unpredictably to the treatment. I always assess the condition of your hair during a consultation before recommending it.
How Long Does It Last?
A keratin blow dry typically lasts 8 to 12 weeks, though I've had clients whose results held for longer. How quickly it fades depends on your hair type, how often you wash your hair, and what products you use at home. Sulphate-free shampoo is essential - sulphates strip the treatment out much faster. I cover more aftercare advice in my post about making hair treatments last longer.
Is It Worth the Money?
At £100, it's not the cheapest treatment on the menu - I won't pretend otherwise. But when I think about the clients who get it done regularly, the ones who come back are the ones who value their time in the morning. If you're spending 30 to 40 minutes blow-drying your hair straight every day, and a keratin treatment cuts that to 10 minutes for the next three months, the maths starts to make sense pretty quickly.
It's also worth it if frizz is genuinely affecting how you feel about your hair. I've seen the confidence shift in clients after their first keratin treatment - when they walk outside and their hair actually stays the way they styled it, that's a real quality-of-life improvement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a keratin treatment make my hair completely straight?
No. A keratin blow dry smooths and reduces frizz, but it doesn't permanently straighten hair. If you have waves or curls, they'll be softer and more relaxed, but they won't disappear entirely. You'll still be able to style your hair curly if you want to - it just won't frizz up.
Can I colour my hair and get a keratin treatment at the same time?
I'd recommend doing colour first and waiting at least two weeks before a keratin treatment. Doing them in the wrong order or too close together can affect how the colour takes. We can plan the timing during your consultation.
How do I look after my hair after a keratin treatment?
Avoid washing your hair for 48 to 72 hours after the treatment to let it fully set. After that, use a sulphate-free shampoo and try to minimise how often you wash. The less you strip the treatment, the longer it lasts.
Is it safe?
The products I use at Locks of Love are formaldehyde-free. It's important to ask about this wherever you go, as some older formulations did contain formaldehyde. I only use products I'd be happy to use on my own hair.
