First Time at a New Hair Salon? Here's What to Expect

By Claire at Locks of Love, Paisley • 5 March 2026 • 4 min read

Switching hairdressers is right up there with switching dentists on the list of things people put off for way too long. You've been going to the same person for years, it's comfortable, and even if you're not thrilled with the results, at least you know what you're getting. Starting over with someone new feels like a risk.

I completely understand that. A fair number of my clients at Locks of Love were nervous before their first visit. So I want to walk you through exactly what happens when you come to a new salon for the first time - at least at mine - so there are no surprises.

Before Your Appointment

You Don't Need to Prepare Anything Elaborate

Honestly, the most helpful thing you can do is save a couple of photos on your phone of hair you like. It doesn't need to be exact - even a rough sense of the colour, length, or style you're drawn to gives me a starting point. If you don't have photos, that's fine too. We'll work it out together.

Come With Your Hair as You Normally Wear It

This might sound odd, but I'd rather see your hair in its natural state than freshly styled. It tells me a lot about your texture, how your hair falls, where it's thicker or thinner, and what your daily routine actually looks like. There's no need to wash it beforehand - especially if you're coming in for colour, because slightly day-old hair actually takes colour better.

What Happens When You Arrive

The Consultation

Every first appointment at Locks of Love starts with a proper conversation. I'll ask what you're looking for, what you've had done before, what's worked and what hasn't, and how much time you realistically spend on your hair each morning. That last one is important - there's no point giving someone a style that needs 30 minutes of blow-drying if they're a wash-and-go person.

I'll also take a look at your hair's condition. If you've had colour before, I need to know what's on there so I can work with it rather than against it. This isn't about judging your previous hairdresser - it's just about understanding what I'm working with.

It's Okay to Speak Up

This is the thing I want every new client to know: it is absolutely fine to say "I don't like that" or "can we try something different" at any point. A good hairdresser wants that feedback. I'd rather you tell me halfway through that you want it a bit shorter than walk out feeling like it's not quite right.

Some people worry about being difficult. You're not being difficult - you're helping me do a better job. I've been doing this for over 12 years and the best results always come from clients who are open about what they want.

What Makes Locks of Love Different

If you've only ever been to busy high-street salons, the biggest thing you'll notice is how quiet it is. Locks of Love is a private, one-to-one studio - it's just you and me. There's no background noise from three other clients and four stylists, no being handed off to a junior for your blow dry, no waiting around while your stylist juggles multiple people.

Your appointment is your appointment. I'm not going anywhere, and neither is my attention. I wrote more about why this approach matters if you're curious about the difference it makes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a consultation before booking a colour appointment?

For a simple root regrowth or cut and blow dry, you can go straight ahead and book. For colour changes - especially if I haven't seen your hair before - I prefer to do a quick consultation first so I can plan properly and give you an accurate price. This can be done as part of your appointment or as a quick separate visit.

What if I'm not sure what I want?

That's completely normal and genuinely fine. A lot of people come in knowing they want a change but aren't sure what. That's what the consultation is for - I'll suggest options based on your hair type, face shape, and lifestyle. We won't do anything until you're comfortable with the plan.

Can I bring someone with me?

Of course. The studio is a calm, private space but you're welcome to bring a friend or family member if it helps you feel more at ease.

No pressure, no hard sell - just great hair in a relaxed setting. I'd love to meet you.
