Why One-to-One Hairdressing Makes All the Difference

By Claire at Locks of Love, Paisley • 19 March 2026 • 5 min read

Before I opened Locks of Love, I spent over a decade working in busy high-street salons. I enjoyed the work - I've always loved hairdressing - but there was one thing that never sat right with me. I was constantly splitting my attention between two, sometimes three clients at once. One in the chair, one under the dryer, one waiting. It was the industry norm, but it meant nobody was getting my full focus.

When I finally set up my own studio at Mirren Court in Paisley, the first decision I made was that I'd only ever see one client at a time. No double-booking. No juggling. Just one person, one appointment, my complete attention. And the difference - for both me and my clients - has been enormous.

What "One-to-One" Actually Means in Practice

When you book an appointment at Locks of Love, the studio is yours. There's nobody else in the chair next to you, no queue of people waiting, no noise from three conversations happening at once. It's just you and me for the duration of your appointment.

That means a few things that you might not get at a bigger salon:

Why I Left the High Street

I want to be clear - I'm not criticising high-street salons. Plenty of them do brilliant work, and I learned my craft in that environment. But the business model is built around volume. To keep the lights on, most salons need to book multiple clients per hour. That's not a failing of the stylists - it's just how the numbers work.

The problem is that it creates a pace that doesn't suit the kind of hairdressing I want to do. Balayage, for example, is a freehand technique. It requires me to hand-paint colour onto individual sections, building up depth and dimension as I go. That takes time and a steady hand. When I was doing it while also keeping an eye on a client under the dryer and someone else waiting for a trim, the quality was inevitably compromised. Not dramatically - but enough for me to notice, even if the client didn't.

I wanted to do work I was genuinely proud of every single time. The only way to do that was to slow down and give each person the time they deserve.

What Clients Actually Notice

The feedback I've had since opening has been overwhelmingly about two things: the quality of the work and the way the experience feels. One of my regulars put it well in a recent review - it's not just about the hair, it's about actually enjoying the appointment rather than enduring it.

A lot of my clients have told me they used to dread going to the hairdresser. Not because of the result, but because of the environment - loud, hectic, impersonal. At Locks of Love, people visibly relax. Some close their eyes during a blow dry. Others tell me it's the only hour in their week where nobody needs anything from them. That matters to me as much as the haircut itself.

Is It More Expensive?

Not really. A cut and blow dry starts from £25. A full head colour from £60. These are comparable to - and often less than - what you'd pay at a high-street salon in Paisley or Glasgow. The difference isn't the price; it's what you get for it.

You're not paying a premium for a private experience. You're just not paying for the overhead of a twelve-chair salon, a reception desk, and a team of juniors. Because it's just me, I can keep prices fair while giving you something you can't get on the high street.

Who It's Best For

Honestly? Everyone. But I've noticed it particularly suits:
